Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
What happens to these kids?

I get the teenage sensations that don’t cut the mustard and end up playing non league or quitting football.

I get the rising stars who don’t get a PL chance and end up with an ok league one of championship career.

But players like Diego Poyet are a curiosity- player of the season at Charlton, given a 4 year contact by Allardyce and now at the age of 24 he is without a club after managing a handful of games in Cyprus.

Where does it all go wrong? Is it a personify defect like Ravel Morrison? Are there other demons at play?

You want some son? ;-)

When I said that it was the highest compliment that I could give to Irwin because it means even on a bad day he would still be a 7 out of 10.

I thought that was understood

"Denis Irwin was a classic 7 out of 10 player"

That is complete and utter claptrap. He was a fantastic footballer, technically and defensively flawless. Honestly, shit you read on here. Saying that, I read on here more than one person saying Paul Scholes weren't much kop.

Denis Irwin only had one flaw as a footballer.

His personality and haircut.

Denis Irwin was brilliant as a footballer. Probably one of the most underrated players (from a fans point of view) ever in my eyes.

Denis Irwin was a classic 7 out of 10 player week in, week out - If most of our current squad were like that we would be pushing for Europa League with Wolves...

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
You need a bit more than talent to make it in football at highest level. Sometimes its just basic things like do people even like you or not? Are you teachable? Do you do what the coaches and managers say?

Then you've got the whole physical aspect, injuries etc..

There are probably tons of footballers out there with more talent than the guys that made it, but they didnt have all the other ingredients and a dose of luck as well.

Back in the day you used to see Dicks swanning around Hollywoods too. I doubt Denis Irwin did the equivalent up in Manchester.

I think you will find that all the goal minders mentioned by the blue eyed handsome idiot in recent months will all flop and end up playing for Braintree fc and such like.

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
I'm still scratching my head at the 'limited talent' of Dennis Irwin. A decade as a regular (over 500 games) in consistently the best team the Premier League has ever seen, playing left back, and he wasn't even naturally left footed!

Alex Ferguson calls him the best value signing he ever made.

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
Oh Dear, have you ever heard of Paolo Maldini? He is the best ;left back to have played the game and makes Dicks look bang average. Andreas Brehme was also in a totally different league to Dick if you are talking globally.

Add to this argument that West Ham have had some of the best left backs the world has ever seen, but hasn't signed a decent one since Julian Dicks the FIRST time around.

Dennis Irwin is one of the best full backs the Premier League has ever seen. Dicks had a wand of a left peg, but as an all round footballer he was nowhere near as good as Irwin.

Remember Paul McCallum from Dulwich Hamlet?

He cost 50K and was considered a hot prospect...a bit of a journeyman but is playing for Barnet now...

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
With Dicks I had the impression that he enjoyed the status of being top dog in the changing room. And for most of his time at West Ham he was undoubtedly one of or the best player we had, in what admittedly at the time was a fairly average squad, so that behaviour was accepted.

However, at Liverpool he was suddenly surrounded by players who were internationals and had titles and trophies to their names. Would the likes of Barnes, Rush, Grobbelaar have put up with a player coming in whose top achievements were two England B caps and a runners up medal from the old second division acting like he was number one?

Could also be that they get found out a little, not having their previous club mates around them sharing the load.

Same with managers, how often have some moved only to be found out when you would of thought they should have better tools at their disposal.

There is a bit of everything, luck, timing being with other players at the same time, a bit of chemistry, passion.

On the flipside look at Noble. So surprised he is still here but still contributes and desire definitely is his attribute. Probably lucky as well as a lot of signings have been shit and found out!

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
I wouldn’t disagree that Dicks had the talent and ability of Irwin. Possibly more
But Irwin had the attitude and professionalism and common sense
Sorry to break it to you but Dicks sometimes acted like an idiot and lacked professionalism.
He was one of those maverick types that find a home at West Ham where being an idiot and lacking professionalism is excused.

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
You forget that Dicksie went to Liverpool, land of free flowing football blah blah

Someone else made a comment about the fact that the club has to suit the player, as well as coaching environment, setup, manager believing in you etc.

Dicks probably found his level at West Ham as he was undoubtedly loved here.

Take him away from that setup and he then becomes alien to all around him.

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
There are a number of reasons why many promising player’s careers eventually plateau and then stall and then just fall off a cliff for what appears to be no good reason.

But I’m sure the main reason is desire. Not the cheap shot “You don’t wanna know you lazy cunt” that you’d hear from the terraces every week. But the desire to maintain the standards that have got players into a Premier League Squad in the first place.

All professional sportsmen are naturally more competitive than the bloke in the street. All other things being equal it is very much the biggest part of what got them there in the first place.

Sometimes what seem very gifted players reach a level where all the natural talent they have is at the same level of everybody else around them and it is that in built desire to succeed is actually a level or two below those around them. They find that they don’t want to prepare mentally, or maintain the diet, or aren’t prepared to fight as other bloke in the same position in the team and they fall away ever so slightly at first. It then drifts from there.

An extreme example for me would be Julian Dicks, who was the finest left back I have seen play the game. Compare Julian Dicks with Denis Irwin, Irwin won countless trophies, honours, international caps and recognition at one of the biggest clubs in the world at time when that club had one its best teams in its history. I defy anyone to tell you that Julian Dicks wasn’t as talented as Denis Irwin.

Julian Dicks plateaued at West Ham, he could play well within himself and satisfy the crowd and management and Julian Dicks at West Ham. I’m sure a little more application or desire could have seen him achieve anything at any club in the world.

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
I suppose the other issue for all the youngsters now is they get paid she’d loads the moment they show any promise, have agents constantly whispering in their ear about bigger moves (for the benefit of the agent, never the player) and are wrapped in cotton wool, surrounded by yes men and not prepared for any form of failure

I’m sure it was either Zlatan or ronaldo who said in an interview not so long ago that just because you are the beat doesn’t mean you don’t need to try when you go out on the pitch - part of being the best is always putting the effort in, whether in training or competition. It’s when you don’t try you stop being the best (even if they make it look easy).

Too many youngsters lack that level of drive to succeed. Especially when you’re ravel or Reece oxford or someone who earned an absolute fortune as a kid on the basis that they should be good at some point.
